What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer develops in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus, and is primarily caused by certain strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection. Its progression is typically slow, often moving through precancerous stages before becoming cancerous, allowing opportunities for early detection. In developed regions, screening programs have reduced its impact, but in areas with limited healthcare access, it remains a significant concern. The PapEasy device is part of the global effort to make cervical cancer screening more accessible and comfortable, reflecting the ongoing commitment to combating this common disease.

Symptoms

Cervical cancer often presents no symptoms in its early stages, making regular screening vital. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include:
Unexpected Bleeding: This can occur between menstrual periods, after sexual intercourse, or following menopause. Any unusual or unexplained bleeding should be a signal to consult a healthcare provider. Pelvic Discomfort: Persistent pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen may be a sign of cervical cancer. This pain might be dull and constant or may come and go. Changes in Vaginal Discharge: An increase in vaginal discharge, changes in its appearance, or an unpleasant odor can be indicative of cervical cancer. Pain During Intimacy: Experiencing pain or discomfort during sexual activity is a common symptom and should not be overlooked. Advanced Symptoms: In later stages, symptoms may include fatigue, weight loss, leg pain or swelling, and difficulties in urinating or defecating.
